<P>Are you ready for another <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/ludacris/artist.jhtml">Ludacris</a> album? It's been two years since 'Cris dropped his last album, <i>Battle of the Sexes,</i> and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. "I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done," the rapper told <a href="http://www.billboard.com/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story#/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> of his upcoming eighth LP, <i>Ludaversal,</i> which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his <a href="/news/articles/1674369/ludacris-1.21-gigawatts-mixtape.jhtml"><i>1.21 Gigawatts</i> mixtape</a> in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> is one person that I've already worked with," he said. "In terms of other artists, you can say that there's going to be a lot of surprises on here." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:711235/cp~id%3D1674412%26vid%3D711235%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A711235" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> The pair already have a few collaborations under their belt. Who can forget Usher's inescapable smash "Yeah!" from his 2004 <i>Confessions</i> album? The two also hooked up on Lil Jon's "Lovers and Friends" in the same year and then again two years ago on Usher's "She Don't Know." As far as what the two have cooked up for <i>Ludaversal,</i> fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001's "Area Codes" and 2004's "Number One Spot") and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006's "Runaway Love" and 2008's "Do the Right Thing"). For <i>Ludaversal,</i> he will get a little personal. "It's been a minute since I've been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about," he said. "So [the album] is mostly about my personal life, my travels, my experiences, rumors, gossip &#8212; you know, everything coming together in one." <i>What are your expectations for Ludacris' new album? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

'G.I. Joe' Sequel Is 'Better Than The First,' Says Channing Tatum

Whether you loved or hated "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," it's fair to say that there were a few things that could be improved upon in a sequel (except Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance as "The Doctor"/Rex though. He was awesome). Now with a second film looming and a lengthy trailer we've overanalyzed it's time to [...]

Oscar's Best Song Category: Why Only Two Nominees?

Complicated voting rules shut out songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Pink.
By John Mitchell

<P>Tuesday morning's (January 24) announcement of the 2012 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/oscars">Oscar</a> nominations delivered plenty of surprises. <a href="/news/articles/1677792/oscar-nominations-suprirses-snubs.jhtml">Michael Fassbender ("Shame"), Albert Brooks ("Drive")</a> and Charlize Theron ("Young Adult") were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Rooney Mara ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") and Max von Sydow ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close") scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:666363" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Despite the fact that a <a href="/news/articles/1676284/oscar-2012-best-song-list.jhtml">short list of 39 tracks</a> were eligible for <a href="/news/articles/1677781/academy-award-nominations-2012.jhtml">nomination</a>, only two were named &#8212; "<a href="/news/articles/1677837/osar-nomination-man-or-muppet-bret-mckenzie.jhtml">Man or Muppet</a>" from "The Muppets" and "Real in Rio" from "Rio" &#8212; leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition. Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it's probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride. Oscar nominations are arrived at using a <i>very</i> complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a "magic number" is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at <i>EW</i>'s <a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2008/01/09/academy-awards" target="_blank">PopWatch</a> break down the selection steps in great detail.) </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:620119" width="240" height="211"></div><p> So this is how the nominees are determined &#8212; with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As <a href="http://www.billboard.com/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story#/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> points out, members of the Academy's music branch now "assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well." This year's Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" or "Real in Rio" by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn't award any other song, including John and Gaga's duet "Hello Hello" or Blige's "The Help" track "Living Proof," a score high enough to secure a nomination. But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. And since actors are the largest voting block of the Academy&#8212; and would have had nothing to do with the tracks selected to contend for Best Original Song &#8212; it's anyone's game. <b>See the complete list of <a href="/news/articles/1677781/academy-award-nominations-2012.jhtml">Academy Awards Nominations</a>.</b></p>

Florida Young Republicans Stand Behind New Voter Laws

'I think if you follow the legal means, it's such an easy process,' Florida State student Mia Simon tells MTV News
By Gil Kaufman

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — There's a storm raging in Florida over new voter-registration laws that groups such as Rock the Vote claim make it harder for them to sign up new voters.

But ask Florida State University student and first-time voter Mia Simon, 19, about those laws, and the political science major will tell you that it's much ado about nothing.

"I have just turned in my forms to become a registered agent with the supervisor of elections, and that means I go through a legal process of handing out the voter registrations and handing them in myself to the supervisor," said Simon, who added that it is because of the changes to the voter-registration rules that she was inspired to become more involved with the process. "I think if you follow the legal means, it's such an easy process to fill them out and then you guarantee that they get to the supervisor of elections," the FSU College Republicans member said.

Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters are among the third-party groups who have sued the state in an effort to get the law overturned. They've argued that new provisions that give their organizations just 48 hours to turn in registration forms, the shortening of the early voting period and threats of civil action should the forms not be filled out correctly amount to a breach of their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association even as they fail to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with what they say are the laws' "confusing and unclear mandates."

Simon said she's had no problem turning the form in within 48 hours and has found the process "really easy" to follow. "I really think it makes it easier," she said. "As long as you follow the law, it's all great."

Considering that she said there are 3.5 million unregistered voters in the state, she is also inspired to get more young voters out to the polls this year and hopes the new laws do what their drafters intended: root out voter fraud. "America stands on the principle of one person, one vote, and this is something that we really need to uphold."

Emma Stone, Natalie Portman Shine On SAG Red Carpet

Stacy Keibler, 'The Help' cast also rocked the carpet at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The style competition is really heating up as awards season rolls on, and at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, it was all about taking risks. A-list actresses brought out their best designer dresses for the event at the Shrine Auditorium, showing off not-so-subtle slits and striking pale-white and sleek-and-chic black gowns.'

"There were a lot of beautiful black gowns on the carpet last night," Celebuzz producer Rachel Maresca said. "We saw Angelina Jolie in black, we saw Emma Stone, we saw Ashlee Simpson."

For photos of the stars on the red carpet, click here.

Also stunning in black was Stacy Keibler, who managed to stand out while walking the carpet alongside boyfriend and SAG nominee George Clooney.

"I think who nailed it the best was Stacey Keibler. She came arm-in-arm with George Clooney in a black lace Marchesa dress. She's been supporting him at all the award shows. She really stood out herself last night," Maresca said.

The women of "Glee" hit the carpet in silver. Lea Michele wore a high-slit Versace gown, while Naya Rivera wore a beaded Naeem Khan dress with a plunging neckline.

"It's comfortable and I really like the color, and I like the silhouette as well. It's heavy, but it's good," Rivera told MTV News.

The undisputed red-carpet winners of the night were the stars of "The Help," who won top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Stone wore a black lace Alexander McQueen dress, while her co-star and winner for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Supporting Role, Octavia Spencer, sparkled in a silver Tadashi Shoji gown. SAG Award winner for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Leading Role Viola Davis was glowing in a white Marchesa gown, and SAG nominee Jessica Chastain decided to go with a pop of color in custom Calvin Klein.

But it was Natalie Portman who stood out above the rest. Last year's best actress winner for "Black Swan" flaunted her post-baby body in a strapless burgundy gown by Giambattista Valli.

"She looked very elegant," Maresca said. "She really wowed everybody."

Demi Moore Replaced By Mary-Louise Parker In 'Lovelace'

In other Demi news, Madonna reportedly reaches out to actress after her hospitalization.
By Jocelyn Vena

Editor's note: While Us Weekly originally reported that "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker would replace Demi Moore as Gloria Steinem in "Lovelace," the filmmakers have confirmed to MTV News that Moore's actual replacement is Sarah Jessica Parker.

Amid her personal woes, Demi Moore, who had been set to play Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic, has been replaced by "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker.

Sources confirm to UsMagazine.com that the TV star will fill in for Moore, who had to drop out of the film earlier this week after she was hospitalized for "exhaustion." On Thursday, there was speculation that Chloë Sevigny would play the feminist icon when she was cast as a feminist journalist, but now it seems that those are two different roles.

"Lovelace" is currently shooting in Los Angeles with Amanda Seyfried playing the film's central character, '70s porn actress Linda Lovelace.

As the Demi drama rolls on, there are reports that Madonna reached out to the actress shortly after she was hospitalized. Moore has since been released from the L.A.-area hospital.

Sources tells E! News that the singer called her actress pal. "Madonna told Demi she was there if she needs anything," the E! source says, adding, "They're pretty tight."

The ladies last hung out during Golden Globes weekend, and they reportedly were going to see one another again over Super Bowl weekend; Madge is slated to perform during the halftime show. The status of their annual post-Oscars bash is currently up in the air.

While speculation runs rampant about why Moore was hospitalized, sources say that her ex, Ashton Kutcher, is "deeply concerned" for her. Moore is rumored to have been doing nitrous oxide before landing in the hospital. "He still cares about her and wants the best for her," the source added. "But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives."

'The Grey' Captures #1 At Weekend Box Office

Katherine Heigl's 'One for the Money' and 'Man on a Ledge' also make the top 5.
By Ryan J. Downey

Photo: Open Road Films

It must be wintertime, because Liam Neeson is #1 at the box office again.

Following the January 2010 release of "Taken" and the February 2011 success of "Unknown," Liam Neeson returned to theaters in another action-heavy role with "The Grey" over the weekend and beat back all other contenders. "The Grey," about a group of oil workers stalked by wolves while stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, debuted with an estimated $20 million.

Katherine Heigl's "One for the Money" had a decent $11.8 million opening, which placed the PG-13 action comedy at #3 on the box-office scorecard. The Sam Worthington-led thriller "Man on a Ledge," on the other hand, opened at #5 with just $8.3 million.

Having proven his biopic mettle with heady fare like "Schindler's List" and "Kinsey," 59-year-old Neeson has entered a career groove playing rough-and-tumble anti-heroes in barn-burning action thrillers. While its opening numbers were slightly lower than "Unknown" ($21.9 million) and "Taken" ($24.7), "The Grey" enjoyed the best critical reviews of the action trio. "['The Grey'] takes death seriously, and partly as a consequence, every moment, every frame, feels alive," wrote New York Times film critic and former "At the Movies" co-host A.O. Scott.

The same cannot be said for "One for the Money," which at press time sat at just 3 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer," which assigns ratings based on reviews from film critics.

"Heigl's comic timing is solid, and she knows her limitations well enough, but there's a hollowness at the movie's center, right where Heigl's heart should be," wrote Sam Adams of The Onion A.V. Club. The film's opening was lower than Heigl's 2010 rom-coms "Killers" ($15.8 million) and "Life as We Know It" ($13.2 million).

"Avatar" and "Clash of the Titans" star Sam Worthington received top billing in "Man on a Ledge," which sat at 25 percent on the Tomatometer at press time. Worthington plays a wrongly accused man who hatches an elaborate scheme to prove his innocence. The last movie co-starring Worthington was the war criminal/ spy drama "The Debt," which opened with $9.9 million.

The rest of the weekend's top five included "Underworld Awakening" at #2 with $12.5 million, which gave the fourth entry in the vampires-and-werewolves franchise a two-week total of $45.1 million, and "Red Tails" at #4 with $10.4 million. The George Lucas-produced World War II flick has made $33.8 million since it opened last weekend. Lucas financed the film's $58 million budget himself.

"The Descendants" and "The Artist" both received a boost from their respective award season attention. George Clooney has racked up trophies for his starring role in the Alexander Payne-directed "Descendants," which expanded from 600 theaters to 2,000 and took in another $6.5 million for an 11-week total of $58.8 million. "The Artist," meanwhile, spiked 42 percent from last week. The Weinstein Co.-produced silent film has made $16.7 million after big wins at several award shows, including three prizes at the Golden Globes.

LeBron James Jumps Over Hapless Defender For Dunk; John Lucas III Trends on Twitter

Poor John Lucas III.

LeBron James' drunk over him was so insane in the first quarter of the Miami Heat's win over the Chicago Bulls Sunday that the defender became an instant trend in the Twitter-verse. He may end up on a poster someday, too ... though not in a good way.

In one of the most ridiculous alley-oops you will ever see - no small feat for the human highlight reel - Dwyane Wade threw a lob to LeBron, who literally JUMPED OVER LUCAS, throwing it down with relative ease no less.

'One For The Money' 'Not Just A Chick Flick,' Stars Say

'There's explosions and there's shooting! You're gonna like it too,' Katherine Heigl tells MTV News, selling her new movie to men.
By Christina Garibaldi

NEW YORK — Since parting ways with "Grey's Anatomy," Katherine Heigl has established herself as a queen of romantic comedies, starring in several "chick flicks" such as "27 Dresses," "Life as We Know It" and "New Year's Eve."

In her latest movie, "One for the Money," based on the best-selling Janet Evanovich novel, Heigl takes on the role of Stephanie Plum, a tough Jersey girl who becomes a recovery agent sent to track down a murder suspect — who just so happens to be her ex-boyfriend.

If it sounds like the perfect recipe for a ladies' night out, not so fast. At the movie's New York premiere, Heigl promised that "One for the Money" will keep women and men on the edge of their seats.

"I wouldn't qualify it as a romantic comedy. It's got [romance] and it's got comedy, but it's mostly about this sort of murder-mystery undertone that keeps it moving and keeps the pace going," Heigl told MTV News. "I always feel like I'm selling it to men, like, 'There's explosions and there's shooting! You're gonna like it too, I promise!' "

Lending her comedic chops to the flick, "The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd agreed with Heigl's assessment: "It's a lot of action and it's a lot of fun. It's something that I think my husband, who is 6-6, 280 pounds, would love. So no, it's not just a chick flick; it's a fun film."

Now, if the ladies of the film haven't convinced non-female moviegoers, they may want to take some advice from their male co-stars.

"There's action sequences," Daniel Sunjata said. "There's definitely a healthy enough dose of testosterone and really good storytelling that I think the guys will have a great time at this movie too."

Heigl's love interest in the film, Jason O'Mara, added, "I think if the guys come and see it, there's gonna be lots in it for them. This is not a frilly romantic comedy. With all due respect to Katie's past work, this is not '27 Dresses.' There's something kind of edgy, something kinda blue-collar about this that gives it a bit of a realism, and I think it's cool. Whether you're male or female, I think you're gonna have a good time."

Check out everything we've got on "One for the Money."

Usher's Next Album 'Soulful, Catchy,' Taio Cruz Teases

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> is hard at work on his next album. Set to work with fellow hitmaker <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/cruz__taio/artist.jhtml">Taio Cruz</a>, the two already cooked up some magic with their <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/guetta_david/artist.jhtml">David Guetta</a> anthem <a href="/news/articles/1670301/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">"Without You,"</a> and it seems they are hoping to recapture that spirit for Usher's follow-up to 2010's <i>Raymond v. Raymond</i>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717257" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the <a href="/news/articles/1674782/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">Guetta hit</a> because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is." <div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:713197/cp~vid%3D713197%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A713197" width="420" height="236" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div></p>

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> is <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/britneyspears" target="_blank">"still glowing"</a> after longtime boyfriend <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">Jason Trawick popped the question</a> to the pop star on Friday. The two spent the weekend in Las Vegas, where Spears flashed her Neil Lane engagement ring as they celebrated their upcoming nuptials and Trawick's 40th birthday. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:720837" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Friends and family have been showing their support and <a href="/news/articles/1676171/britney-spears-engagement-fan-reaction.jhtml">well-wishes</a> for the couple's upcoming wedding, including Spears' <a href="/news/articles/1676192/britney-spears-engaged-k-fed-comments.jhtml">ex-husband Kevin Federline</a>, who told <a href="http://tvweek.ninemsn.com.au/blog.aspx?blogentryid=963715&showcomments=true" target="_blank"><i>TV Week</i></a> magazine that he was "really happy for her." Yet it seems that no one is as happy for Spears than her die-hard fans. MTV News spoke with Las Vegas-based webmaster Jordan Miller, who runs Spears' biggest fan site, <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/" target="_blank">BreatheHeavy.com</a>, and he told us just how thrilled he is about the news. "I was pretty excited for Britney when I found out she was engaged," Miller said. "I think it's a good step for her to have some sort of relationship where she can share her feelings and thoughts about her life, so I'm happy for her." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:720382" width="240" height="211"></div><p> And it seems all of his followers agree. "The overwhelming reaction from fans about the news of Britney's engagement is that they're really happy for her," Miller said. "They think it's such good timing for her, to finish the tour and kind of have a break and be able to start a new chapter in her life. So I think the majority of fans are really happy for Britney and that it's definitely a good step for her." The news doesn't come as a big shock to Miller, since rumors of Britney's engagement have been swirling for months. "There were rumors for the last six months pretty much saying he was going to do it in December," Miller said of the couple, who have been <a href="/news/articles/1676167/britney-spears-jason-trawick-engaged-timeline.jhtml">dating since 2009</a>. "So it's cool to see that it actually happened and she's going to get married." Details have not been released as to when Britney will tie the knot, but it seems Miller already has the perfect wedding gift in mind from all of her fans. "If fans could get Britney a cool present, it would be a vacation to a tropical island where she didn't have to be around anyone but Jason," Miller said. <i>What do you think of Britney's engagement? Sundance 2012: The Five Most Buzzed-About Movies

From teen comedy 'The First Time' to horror flick 'V/H/S,' MTV News wraps up the most talked-about premieres.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

For those of us not lucky enough to be in Park City, Utah, right now, the biggest stories coming out of the Sundance Film Festival detail the standing ovations and the distribution deals that filmmakers sign for millions of dollars.

With so many films making their premieres at Sundance, it can be difficult to keep track of which ones you need to be paying attention to and looking out for later this year. To help you out, we've rounded up the five films that are coming out of Park City with the biggest buzz.

Here is our list of the five most talked-about Sundance films.

"The Surrogate"
With Oscar nominations being announced Tuesday, looking forward to the 2013 Oscar nominees may seem a little premature. That hasn't stopped festival attendees from heralding the performances from John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy and predicting Academy Award nominations come next January. In the film, Hawkes plays Mark, a man in an iron lung. Mark decides that he must finally lose his virginity and contacts a sex surrogate played by Hunt. "The Surrogate" earned standing ovations and some of the earliest Oscars talk we've ever heard.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild"
One of the outright surprises of the festival came in the form of 6-year old Quvenzhané Wallis and her breakout role in Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts of the Southern Wild." The film virtually came out of nowhere and won over audiences handedly. Set in some alternate but fairly relatable reality, Wallis plays Hushpuppy, who has to navigate a brave new world after her father becomes ill. Arguably the festival's most coveted distributor, Fox Searchlight, snapped up the distribution rights for "Beasts" after paying $6 million for "The Surrogate."

"V/H/S"
What better praise can a horror film get than an audience member fainting during a screening? The horror anthology "V/H/S" supposedly had that exact effect on one unlucky audience member. Six of horror's hottest up-and-coming directors contributed segments to this found-footage film, which follows a group of burglars breaking into a mysterious house to search for a specific VHS tape. The movie scared audiences throughout the festival and is considered a must-see for horror fans.

"The First Time"
Once you find out that a movie called "The First Time" follows a blossoming romance between two teenagers, you'd probably assume you know what's going on. Most of the reviews for the film acknowledge their expectations going into the teen comedy from writer-director Jon Kasdan, but many of those reviews then describe how "The First Time" surprised them with its infectious charm. Set over the course of one weekend, "The First Time" stars Britt Robertson of "The Secret Circle" and Dylan O'Brien of MTV's "Teen Wolf" as high school kids who meet but are tied up in other relationships.

"Celeste and Jesse Forever"
Rashida Jones has charmed audiences in movies and television for years but always remained just outside the realm of leading lady. Perhaps deciding to make the change herself, Jones co-wrote and starred in "Celeste and Jesse Forever," an indie romance with Andy Samberg. The two play a recently divorced couple attempting to remain friends after the breakup. Critics applauded the film's script, which strikes a balance between comedy and poignant romantic drama.

Which of these five films are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments!

Lana Del Rey's Born To Die: The Reviews Are In!

Despite all the hype and controversy, critics are pretty impressed by Del Rey's atmospheric music.
By Gil Kaufman

The now-infamous "Saturday Night Live" performance fail. All the hype about her looks, her path to the spotlight and the obligatory album leak a week before her debut dropped.

Lana Del Rey survived a lifetime's worth of slings and arrows before her major-label debut, Born to Die, was even released. But now that it's officially out, critics have had a chance to listen to the atmospheric tracks she's put together, and for the most part, they're pretty impressed.

The Chicago Tribune gave it two out of four stars and said the finished product is not always as interesting as the run-up to its release. "[The album] positions itself as a knowing retro commentary. It borrows heavily from B movies starring various second- and third-level 'Rebel Without a Cause' bad boys on motorcycles, string-drenched 'Last Kiss' pop tunes in which young lovers die in each other's arms, beehived teens-with-attitude declaring, 'He hit me and it felt like a kiss,' " music critic Greg Kot wrote. While Kot said Del Rey wishes to be taken seriously as "the bad girl in a gown, the cabaret singer with a masochistic streak," he said she's not always up to the task, even as he praised her distinctive, draggy vocal delivery and the dramatic, eerie arrangements from producer Emilie Haynie.

Over at BBC, the focus was squarely on the music, saying above and beyond the drama, Born to Die is about "something older and more mysterious than that; the extraordinary, resilient power of the pop song." The reviewer lamented that nothing on the 12-track album quite reaches the exquisite bummerness of lead single "Video Games," with several of the songs running "perilously close, while revealing there's more to her than the love-stunned torch singer [of that song]." What makes the album so fascinating and sets Del Rey apart from the typical "I'm hot, you're hot" pop tart is her "preoccupation with Hollywood archetypes of American femininity, and her ability to shape-shift between them."

MTV News' own James Montgomery believed the hype, writing that the album was "positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope." For him, the album is a "thrilling headphone experience" that sounds like the $1 million he suspected it cost to make.

The U.K.'s Guardian also praised the "sumptuous" orchestration and Del Rey's "fine" voice. But after being impressed by the "beguiling description of a mundane love" affair in "Video Games," the reviewer said the album's other lyrics are "incredibly heavy-handed in their attempts to convince you that Lana del Rey is the doomed but devoted partner of a kind of Athena poster bad boy, all white vest, cheekbones and dangling ciggie." If anything, the Guardian critic didn't buy the Del Rey tough-girl personality and said the best bet is to mostly ignore the lyrics and focus on "how magnificently most of the melodies have been constructed."

Conrad Murray Sentence 'Not Enough,' MJ Fans Say

But other Michael Jackson supporters outside L.A. courthouse tell MTV News 'justice has been served.'

Conrad Murray looks on during the final stage of Conrad Murray's defense in his involuntary manslaughter trial in the death of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 1, 2011

<P><b>LOS ANGELES</b> &#8212; During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, <a href="/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the <a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson family</a>. When <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">Murray was sentenced to four years</a> in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:715142.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "Four years &#8212; not enough, but at least something," said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. "And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing." One pair of friends might have been wearing matching <i>Thriller</i> T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray's sentence certainly didn't match. "If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum &#8212; I know she's not happy, but I'm happy," one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. "I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall." "It's better than nothing, but it's not even close to justice," said another fan, wearing Jackson's trademark fedora and sequined glove. "Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It's unconscionable. He didn't even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It's insane." The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, <a href="/news/articles/1675080/conrad-murray-sentence-four-years-experts.jhtml">legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News</a> that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence. Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out. "The only thing I'm worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest," she told MTV News. "I'm just hoping it'll be four years, that's what I'm praying. I'm just glad that justice has been served today, and I'm glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I'm sure Michael's looking from heaven right now."</p>

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Jewel Samad/AFP/Getty Images

<P>Officially, <a href="/news/articles/1617945/janes-addiction-killers-turn-up-heat-on-lollapaloozas-last-day.jhtml">Lollapalooza ended Sunday night</a> in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from <a href="/music/artist/killers_the/artist.jhtml">the Killers</a> and <a href="/music/artist/janes_addiction/artist.jhtml">Jane's Addiction</a>. Unofficially, it ended <i>very</i> early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures. To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, <a href="/music/artist/queens_stone_age/artist.jhtml">Queens of the Stone Age</a> mastermind Josh Homme and <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere. According to <a href="http://blogs.suntimes.com/derogatis/2009/08/them_crooked_vultures_at_metro.html" target="_blank">some reports</a>, the Vultures actually turned <i>down</i> Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town. Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures &#8212; Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar &#8212; ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called <i>Never Deserved the Future,</i> and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans). The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard &#8212; <a href="http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2009/08/concert-review-them-crooked-vultures-at-metro.html" target="_blank"><i>Chicago Tribune</i></a> critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" &#8212; delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the <i>Chicago Sun-Times'</i> Jim DeRogatis. It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures &#8212; there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October. Early Monday, a <a href="http://twitter.com/crookedvultures" target="_blank">Crooked Vultures Twitter account</a>, which had previously posted links to the band's <a href="http://www.themcrookedvultures.com/" target="_blank">official-looking Web site</a> and the Metro's online ticketing site &#8212; posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a <i>Deserve the Future</i> T-shirt. Cost: $30.</p>

<P><b>LOS ANGELES</b> &#8212; <a href="/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:652696" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Der&#252;lo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson. Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for <a href="/news/articles/1663732/britney-spears-st-bernard-project.jhtml">the St. Bernard Project</a>. <a href="/photos/keha-britney-spears-selena-gomez-and-many-more-at-wango-tango-2011/1663910/6129255/photo.jhtml"><b>Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011.</b></a> Spears' <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator <a href="/news/articles/1639312/justin-bieber-usher-ignite-crowd-at-kiis-fms-wango-tango.jhtml">Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival</a> for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing. "That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her." While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower. "Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it." While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage. "I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything." Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement. "Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup." <i>Were you at Wango Tango? Share your experience in the comments below!</i></p>
